Minot Area Recovery Fund
On June 26th, 2011 a new flood record was set in Minot, North Dakota at 1,561.72 feet above sea level, three feet above the previous record set back in 1881.

Approximately 12,000 people are displaced from their homes. Many evacuees are living with friends and family members, which shows the caring and generous spirit of the Minot Community.

It is estimated that 20% of Minot has sustained damage from the flood. Over 4,000 homes have been affected: 2,376 of those homes have extensive damage from 6-10 feet of water and 805 of the 4,100 homes are completely damaged beyond repair. Half of our public schools have been affected by the flood with six of our local schools completely inundated with water and two others having water pumped out of their basements.

At this time officials are anticipating $300 million or more in damage. Unfortunately, only $40-$45 million has been identified for potential buyouts for the individuals who will have completely lost their homes. That would provide each of the 805 families who have suffered complete loss approximately $50,000 to rebuild a new home.

In response to the massive devastation caused by the historic flood of 2011, the Minot Area Community Foundation has established the Minot Area Recovery Fund. It became apparent early on that the recovery needs would be even greater than we first realized, which is why MACF has identified its focus to help the communities of the Souris Basin clean up, restore, and rebuild.
